The article is devoted to the connection and dependence of the phenomenology of religion on theology. The author traces how the phenomenology of religion managed to emancipate itself from theology. The heritage of the leading Dutch phenomenologist of religion Gerardus van der Leeuw is analyzed in order to identify explicit and implicit theological prerequisites. According to Leeuw, in carrying out its task, the phenomenology of religion is designed to answer the question of what the objects of religious life look like, and this requires the classification of these objects, the allocation of their types, the connection of relatives and the division of the distant in meaning. But for the generalizations religion first of all need to be understood - and this is for Leeuw the main method of discipline. And also, sympathy must be the basis of understanding. The existential distance existing between the subject and the object (researcher and phenomenon) of research requires overcoming not by logical way, but intuitively, because it is possible to understand someone else only through comparison with what you have yourself. Also, the article deals with the theoretical and methodological aspect of the phenomenology of Leeuw, in conclusion, emphasizes the eclecticism of his theory.
