The subject of the article is the theoretical discussion in the British press of the last third of the XIX century on the problems of the regulation of the inter-ethnic and inter-confessional relations in the British India. The author analyzed the views of C.W. Dilke, A. Lyall, F. Roberts, W.H. Gregory, who appreciated the establishment of the balance of interests between Hindu's and Mussulmen's castes as a method of preventing of the inter-ethnic conflicts.
