The article deals with the theory of the development of Christian dogma, for the first time for traditional Christianity formulated by the Catholic philosopher and theologian, Cardinal John Henry Newman. This theory, as well as the name of its author, is still little known in Russia, despite the enormous influence that it had on the development of Catholic, as well as Protestant, and Orthodox theology and religious philosophy of the twentieth century. Newman viewed the Christian doctrine as originally integral and complete, but changing in history. He distinguished the divine revelation as such and its perception by a separate individual. Newman explained the legality of the changes that occurred in the Catholic dogma: the question of the Filioque, the doctrine of purgatory, the question of the special veneration of the Virgin Mary, the question of the legality of the supremacy of the pope, and others. Newman selects seven notes of the true developments of the Christian doctrine, distinguishing it from corruption. The article is written on the basis of the author’s translation of the works of D. G. Newman.
