The mammological collection of Acad. V. A. Obruchev Kyakhta Museum is one of the oldest natural-science museum collections in Siberia and the Far East. It started to form in the 90s of the 19th century. For more than a century of its existence, it has become the richest treasury of knowledge about the fauna of Transbaikal and Northern Mongolia. The initiators of its creation were representatives of local intelligentsia, merchant class, local administration and political exiles who lived here - P. S. Mikhno, V. S. Molleson, Yu. D. Talko-Gryntsevich, I. D. Sinitsyn, etc., as well as famous researchers D. A. Klements, G. N. Potanin, etc. Currently, it contains 603 archival units of the main fund, including 294 carcasses, 59 taxidermied animals, 37 animal skins, 51 skeletons and 52 horns belonging to 79 species, 24 families and 9 groups of mammals.
