Territories of advanced social and economic development as a new organizational form of development of the region (on the example of the Republic of Karelia)

Today we witness changes in the spatial development ofRussian Federation. Advanced social and economicdevelopment territories are introduced as a new institution.The main aim of the article is to show the place of theadvanced development territories in solving problems of aregion. The article considers various institutions for thedevelopment of territories, such as free economic zones,special economic zones, advanced development zones. Data onthe activities of special economic zones in the RussianFederation are given. The differences between advanceddevelopment zones and special economic zones are indicated.The main attention is paid to the establishment of advancedsocial and economic development territories in mono-industrytowns. The information on the number of mono-industry townsand their categories is presented. The regional aspect of theproblem is considered on the example of the Republic ofKarelia. The article provides rationalization for the necessity ofestablishing of advanced social and economic developmentterritories in Karelia. The requirements for residents, theconditions for attracting residents to these territories are given.Conclusion is made about the possible use of advanceddevelopment territories in diversification of the region'seconomy.
