The Our Lady Dormition monastery in Tikhvin to 1917 was one of the most significant monasteries of the Russian Orthodox Church. A year after the revolution, it experienced some anti-religious persecution by the Soviet authorities during which the first arrests of the monks occurred. A heavy blow was caused also by the launched campaign of withdrawal of Church values and the Renovationist schism organized by the authorities. However, thanks to the selfless activities of its rector Bishop of Tikhvin Antoniy (Demyanskiy), the monastery had managed to remain faithful to Patriarch Tikhon. The Dormition monastery was closed in autumn 1924, after the forced transfer of all temples of the revivalists and the arrests of some monks, including the Abbot.
