Trade turnover of the Russian Federation and the Republic of Tajikistan in 1992-2022 (on the 30th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations)

The article provides a comparative statistical analysis of the bilateral trade turnover between Russia and Tajikistan at the entire modern stage of their relationship (1992-2022). The study is generally one of the first in Russian historiography. The author identifies three stages for the analysis of trade relations between the two countries: the first covers the 1990s, the second - 2000-2013, the third begins in 2014 and continues up today. At each stage, the cost indicators of the total volume of mutual trade, exports and imports, as well as the share of each of the two countries in them are analyzed. The degree of influence of external factors (the international financial crisis of 2008-2009, the Ukrainian crisis, COVID-19) and internal factors (the civil war in the Republic of Tatarstan of 1992-1997, the default of 1998 in Russia) on mutual trade between Russia and Tajikistan was assessed separately. The latter had a negative impact on mutual trade, which generally fell during the above-mentioned crises. However, this decline was not of a long-term nature, could not affect both exports and imports at once, and was overcome within a few years. The total trade turnover of our countries has been steadily growing throughout the period under review and has reached record volumes today. Russia has been Tajikistan's main trading partner for the second decade.
