The article reveals the concept of traditional holidays. Due to the fact that traditional holidays are a complex, multidimensional phenomenon, it is quite difficult to give an unambiguous definition of this phenomenon. The authors consider various types of traditional festivals presented by renowned ethnographers. In the course of the analysis of different theories about the occurrence of holidays, the authors have revealed multivalued approaches that help to assess the essence of this definition. The basis of the holiday is the need for communication. Particular attention in this work is given to the concept of the indigenous peoples of Sakhalin Region. The historical peculiarities of the aborigines of Far East and the originality of their cultures largely depended on the geographical conditions of their living environment. According to the ethnic principle, the territory of resettlement of the Far Eastern aborigines included several large areas, each of which had its own specifics due to the geographical environment, the process of historical development of peoples, their belonging to a particular language group, the productive activities of peoples and the their interrelationships...
