The transformation of collective memory in the global era

This paper aims to provide an overview of the transformation of collective memory throughout the history: from pre-modern, modern, and into the global era. The article describes features of globalization and the way that these shape the emergence of global memory. The domestic and foreign theories devoted to the global memory are examined; different approaches to this phenomenon are presented. The paper underlines the importance of remembering the past in the processes of constructing and maintaining community throughout history. Various functions of the global memory in social system are distinguished. First, the integrational potential of collective remembering, that provide international solidarity is argued. Second, the problem of identification risks in connection with the appearance of the consciousness of a common humanity and cosmopolitan identity is considered. Finally, the concept of “memory policy” and some of the consequences of the political utilization and manipulation of the past are discussed.
