Transcontinental pathway of the Common Ringed Plover Charadrius hiaticula tundrae // Wader Study 124 (3): 175-184. Translated from English: PS Tomkovich. Little is known about the flights of Charadrius hiaticula ties in the Asian part of its range. This study describes the seasonal movement of birds from the most eastern population of the subspecies Ch. h. tundrae (south of Chukotka, Russia) based on information from the luminance recorders (geolocators). The wintering areas of the five males were scattered from the Persian Gulf to the Nile Delta and southern Somalia. During the wintering period, three birds made only local movements, whereas the other two flew north to 1,100 and 3,200 km in the second half of March one month before the start of spring migration. In the post-nesting period, the birds migrated using the strategy of short flights, following the West Asian-East African flight path and making hundreds of stops of varying lengths, as recorded by the conduction sensors embedded in the geolocators. We distinguish between the three main regional areas for stopping birds on flights to the south and north. Individual paths of movement of birds were similar in the fall and spring in the southwestern half of their paths, whereas for Siberia a ring route was identified, the distance of flights was greater, and the speed of movement of birds was higher in spring than in autumn. The direction of seasonal migrations of tie knots most likely reflects the historical expansion of the breeding area of the species to the east.
