The article deals with the leading role of brass instruments in the orchestral palette of the XIX century on the example of the work of the outstanding German composer Richard Wagner (1813-1883). In the second half of the 18th century in Europe the processes connected with modifications of musical instruments became more active, which was directly connected with the formation of new genres of instrumental music of the sonata-symphonic cycle, based on the new homophonic-harmonic stock, which replaced the polyphonic one. In the new music, ladotonal and ladoharmonic relations, which reached the pinnacle of their development in the development of musical form, become important. Due to new trends in musical culture, the role of instrumental music is being reconsidered, leading to a reassessment of ensemble and orchestral composition and a natural need for modification of many musical instruments. The purpose of this article is to focus on the increasing dominance of the brass group, their modernisation and the emergence of new types, in particular, a variety of trumpets - bass trumpets and the so-called Wagner tubas, which enriched the timbre colours of the whole orchestra and still amaze with the power of their sound.
