Difficulties in social and economic development and manufacturing capabilities of domestic enterprises in the first third of the XIX - the early XX centuries

The article examines the industrial and the socio-economic activities of a family of industrialists, entrepreneurs and philanthropists Bardygins (Egoryevsky district, Ryazan province), their commercial activities and public service. The author draws attention to the activities of their competitors in business and manufacturing - the factories of the families of Kartsevs, Knyazevs, and Khludovs. It’s emphasized, that it was the cotton production activity that provided them with the capital, and allowed to develop an extensive social activities and to get into the civil service, and subsequently to devote the life to patronage and philanthropy.
