The paper examines the concept of the «expanded West», described by Zbigniew Brzezinski in his work «Strategic Vision». The trends of westernization and democratization of the Turkish Republic outlined by the author have undergone serious changes over the past 10 years, which casts doubt on the relevance of his idea now. The paper gives an analysis of events that may become an obstacle to Turkey's further rapprochement with Europe and the United States. Based on the data studied, the author draws a conclusion about the complication of Ankara's relations with Brussels and Washington and, as a result, the gradual loss of relevance of Brzezinski's concept.
