To the 200th anniversary of Galsan Gomboev (1818-1863) - a scholar of the Russian specialist in Mongolian studies O. M. Kovalevsky

The article is dedicated to Galsan Gomboev, who was one of the originators of the scholar school of Mongol Studies in Russia along with such outstanding researchers of the history and culture of the Mongolic peoples as I. Ya. Schmidt, O. M. Kovalevsky, and A. V. Popov. Considering the main career highlights and directions of G. Gomboev's scientific activity, based on the study of ancient Mongolian writing sources, their translation and publication, the article show that development of Mongol Studies in the first half of the 19th century was based on collection and accumulation of the materials about the Mongolic peoples. The creation of a source base was fundamental, thus G. Gomboev’s mentor, professor of Kazan University O. M. Kovalevsky welcomed and coordinated his work as a Mongolian language speaker in this area.
