Satisfaction with marriage as an indicator of marital compatibility

At present, the society needs for establishment of factors that maintain the stability of marital relations, their interconnection and influence on the family. The article deals with the interrelation of marriage satisfaction and the characterological compatibility of the spouses. The topic is covered from different sides of the influence of this aspect on the satisfaction with marriage. The leading methods of the research are sociometry, marriage questionnaire and compatibility tests, statistical methods that allow to reveal the interrelation between the marriage satisfaction and the compatibility of spouses, and also to reveal the significant differences between male and female ideas of their own compatibility. The authors confirmed the main hypothesis for the existence of the relationship between the psychological compatibility of spouses and their satisfaction with marriage: the higher the compatibility of spouses, the higher their satisfaction with marriage, and vice versa. The article presents the results of a comparative analysis of the level of satisfaction with the marriage of men and women, analyzes the possible psychological reasons for this aspect, and draws an analogy with other studies in this field. According to the results of the empirical study, a particular hypothesis about the existence of differences between the objective indicator of the characterological compatibility of the spouses and the so-called subjective measure of compatibility, as a personal representation of the spouses about their marital compatibility, was not confirmed. The results of the research can be useful in developing methods for marriage counseling, correcting the incompatibility of spouses within the framework of family therapy, and also serve as a source of additional information for making recommendations to young spouses and measures to prevent family conflicts.
