Decline and prospects for the restoration of Galician nationalism

The paper observes the history and present situation of Galician nationalism. The study analyzes the development of the nationalist political movement in the region and shows the results of the 2015-2019 local elections for nationalist parties. Their presence in the local parliaments of Galicia, Catalonia, and the Basque Country is compared. Four reasons for the decline of Galician nationalism are formulated and explained: economic, migration, historical, and national ones. The author considers the 2018 non-partisan nationalist associations such as the Galician Way and the National Galician Assembly, their goals and projects to unite Galician nationalists. These organizations’ activities are positively assessed as they can contribute to the development of culture, language, and national identity of the region’s residents, which will fail to lead to outbreaks of separatism but will vent existing and future nationalist sentiments in case of low economic development.
