The Russian Intelligentsia is not monolithic in its relationship with Christianity. This becomes obvious if one looks at the contradictions in the lives and work of one of the great thinkers and writers at the turn of the 20th century, Vasily V. Rozanov. These contradictions have been studied in the seminal work of V. A. Fateyev “The Life of Vasily Rozanov”, published by “The Pushkin House” (St. Petersburg, 2013). The author of this paper sees the value of Fateev’s book not only in his unique attention to the details in Rozanov’s biography, but also in his ability to reveal the spiritual climate of the era. Rozanov’s views are of value also for the modern intelligentsia since his mistakes and errors are often repeated in our time.
