The history of the Pushkin’s country estate Mikhailovskoe from the date of the poet’s death till the centennial anniversary of his birth is considered in the article. The information on the property ownership by the descendants of the Russian poet is studied. A progressing decline of the family estate in the 60s of the XIXth century forced it’s owner - G. A. Pushkin, the son of the poet - to build a new manor house instead of the old dilapidated one. A reaction of the Russian society to this renovation was rather negative. G. A. Pushkin received multiple accusations of not being honorable enough about his father’s legacy. The upcoming anniversary of the poet’s birth, a growing number of visitors, and a lack of care about the family’s cemetery revealed the necessity to change the owner of the estate. Due to this reason, the family estate together with the poet’s grave became the property of the state in 1899.
