The article is devoted to toughening penalties for defamation in connection with the adoption of a law on fake news. Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law on blocking fake news. The relevant information appeared on the official Internet portal of legal information. The signed law prohibits the dissemination of information that is considered unreliable. Such are the news, which through the distortion of the facts creates threats to society. Among them - the possible harm to the health and life of people, threats to the work of important objects, violation of order and others. Resources that violate the non-proliferation requirement of such information are threatened with blockage. The Prosecutor General’s Office will follow the execution of the law. The agency will track fakes and contact Roskomnadzor. In turn, the regulator will notify the editors of the portal about the violation found. After receiving a letter from Roskomnadzor, employees are required to immediately remove the fake information and report back to it. In case of non-compliance with the law, the resource will be blocked. The authors of the article reveal the main aspects of introducing new changes in the legislation of Russia. Particular attention is drawn to law enforcement practice. The problem of contradictory tendencies in legislation and the possibilities for the effective protection by citizens of the Russian Federation of their rights are raised.
