Verification of medical reports on death of people exposed to ionizing radiation, who were entered into the database of the national radiation and epidemiological registry

Results of quality control of medical reports on death of people whose information was entered into the NRER database (emergency accident workers, the residents of the mostly contaminated with radionuclides territories of Russia) are presented in the article. Information on causes of death enters the Registry as electronic and paper-based files "Cause-of-death card" designed at the NRER department, copies of primary reports enter the Registry as well. Compliance of reported cause of death with ICD-10 codes and completeness of information transferred from primary reports to the Cause of Death Card are verified. After verification the data are entered into the subregistry of mortality. For the period from 1995 to 2009 70473 cards and 102724 copies of primary records were checked. Results of verification and corrected data were sent to regional centers of NRER. For that period the number of errors reduced from 12 % to 1-2 %.
