The paper explored the legislation that emerged in the Ancient Rus and over the period of feudal disunity, in order to identify specifics of the system of penalty established, and factors having affected the setting up of, for probable application of the used-to-be knowhow further in law-making. The author has traced emergence of the in-public principle in punishment, as well as the principle of private responsibility, and demonstrated the range of penal measures being common for legal practices of that period, and observed penal measures that were specified for such and such crime, those put on the grounds of variation in kinds of penalty.
