The paper presents the results of a study of the history of the creation of the viola d’amore and some other instruments with resonator strings from around the world. The viola d’amore is considered as an instrument that has occupied its own niche among string group instruments since its appearance in the XVII century, and some aspects of the origin of this instrument in the context of belonging to various string groups are also investigated. It is shown that the viola d’amore design was finally established by the XVIII century. Great craftsmen turned to the manufacture of this ancient instrument, which indicates the recognition of the unique sound characteristics of the viola d’amore. The paper provides examples of compositions created specifically for the viola d’amore in various periods of time by outstanding composers who recognized and used the unique sound characteristics of this instrument. It is concluded that due to the unusual design, in particular resonator strings, which are responsible for the special sound qualities of the instrument, the viola d’amore attracts the interest and attention of composers and performers to this day, as well as the need to study and popularize this instrument.
