Considering the data of a qualitative sociological study, the article reveals the main visual means of identifying public spaces as the capital city's ones, based on the use of ethnic and national-state specifics and the main visual codes of urban identity of the capitals of the republics in the structure of the Russian Federation. The main content of visual representations of the identity of the capitals of the republics in urban architectural landscapes, social advertising and souvenir products is analyzed on the example of the capital of the Republic of Mordovia - the city of Saransk.
