Contribution of eminent mathematicians to the development of the Russian navy in the XVIII - first third of the XIX century

The article examines the development of the Russian Navy in the period of the XVIIIth - the first third of the XIXth century and the role of eminent mathematicians in providing this process. The aim of the study is to consider the application of the laws of mathematics to the creation of ship designs, as well as to analyze the contribution of scientists and engineers to the construction and improvement of the Russian Navy. The article is written using archival sources and rare original literature. It is emphasized that the main role in the responsible and complex process of designing ships was played by scientists, mathematicians and engineers, shipbuilders as bearers of special knowledge. The conclusion dwells upon the fact that the qualification of the engineers, their ability to professionally perform the necessary calculations were the most important factors that ensured the high seaworthiness and combat capabilities of the ships of the Russian Navy.
