The impact of seasonality on supply chain configuration in transport logistics

The paper substantiates the high significance of the analysis of the mechanisms to optimize transport components of supply chain due to the high shipping costs in the overall structure of logistic expenses of the enterprise. The study investigates the structure of the total volume of a cargo transportation by different types of transport in Russia. The analysis shows that it is advisable to examine the scope and mechanisms of the competition between motor and railway transport in the field of transportation of goods. The authors consider the competition factors of these types of transport and clarify trends towards changes in competing options resulting in the identification of a price factor as one of the main mechanisms of competition. The impact of seasonal changes in rates for transportations by the above-mentioned types of transport is reviewed. The authors conclude that the seasonal factor is relevant and to be taken into account on the cargo transportation market when generating the supply chains of the enterprise.
