The energy policy of the European Union has been actively developing for the past few years with an increased attention paid to the energy security. The need for security becomes crucial when it comes to crisis and current practices prove ineffective. The study discusses the impacts of the security factor on the development of energy policy, including the Energy Union. The goal of security in the energy sector substantiates a significant number of initiatives in this regard. It is argued that the securitization of relationships, i.e. presenting an issue as a security threat, remains a mechanism that can be used to change the line of energy policy. At the same time, the EU energy policy evolution may minimize such risks.
