The article deals with issues related to the development of Russian cinematography in the twenties of the XIX century. The findings show that the formation and development of cinematography in those years were largely due to socio-political conditions. The analysis of the activity of cinematographers in the new economic policy era (NEP) shows that many films of that period both solved ideological issues and were made professionally at a high artistic level, and enjoyed audience success. The experience of the new economic policy of the 1920-1930s may be in demand in modern Russia.
