Massage is an effective tool for physiotherapy. Massage is widely used in both human and veterinary medicine. But there is still insufficient data about massage effect on the body taking into account the method of massage, power, frequency and time of exposure. Therefore, the purpose of this article is to review the available information on the effect of massage on the animal and human body. We have to search for issues that have not yet been sufficiently disclosed through research in the field of massage in Russia and abroad. Massage is a quite simple method for rehabilitation after diseases and injuries, as well as for relaxing or toning the body. The article provides differences and similarities of manual and electromechanical massage. It is concluded that the greatest effect can be expected only with the combined use of these methods. Deep reveal of mechanisms at the level of tissues, cells using manual and electromechanical massage in the future will allow us to make recommendations on exposure, strength and technique of action for maximum effect. There is not enough such information in the literature. The effect of an increase and then a decrease in skeletal muscle tone, an increase in metabolic processes in organs and tissues, as well as an effect on skin receptors and reflex reaction was revealed. This also depends on how long after the exercise, or during what period of rehabilitation and treatment the massage procedure was performed. This is a huge area for research, so further studies on the effects of massage will be conducted using electromyography, thermography and photoplethysmography methods. In the future, the use of electroencephalography methods will also contribute to a better understanding of the effectiveness of massage, since first of all there is an effect on the nervous system.
