The study examines the issue of the international recognition of Transnistria as a de facto state and analyzes the legitimacy of its recognition by the international community. The author considers the relationships between Moldova and Transnistria in the context of the negotiation process and comes to the conclusion that Moldova current authorities will not recognize Transnistria. Further, the strong evidence of Moldova’s drift towards Romania, the European Union, and NATO is presented. The author elaborates on the political situation in the Republic of Moldova and tries to predict the results of the forthcoming parliamentary elections. It is concluded that if the pro-European political parties win the elections and Moldova’s European choice is finally preferred, Russia will have a compelling reason to recognize the Transnistrian Moldavian Republic.
