The article deals with the theoretical principles for determining the normal pre-stresses across the cross section of the beam at the stage of its manufacture. The thermal effect of the welding process on the temperature distribution along the cross-section of welded plates and methodological basis for determining the zones of active residual welding stresses are described. Stress-stain state of the steel plate when welding the weld bead on its longitudinal edge, analytical expressions of residual welding stresses in the manufacture of steel beams and the influence of residual welding stresses on the stress state of the beams under the influence of external vertical loads are stated in the paper.
