The impact of tourism on urban space: a literature review

The article presents a review of foreign and domestic works on the relevant and poorly researched topic "Influence of tourism on urban space". The review covers the entire period from the beginning of the emergence of "urban tourism" as a new interdisciplinary direction of scientific research (1980s). There has been a transition from the narrow meaning of "urban travel" to a broad understanding of urban tourism as a development factor of urban space. The active development of city travel, a special type of tourism, since the 1970s was belatedly reflected in the scientific research of urban, geography, sociology, and cultural studies. And now it continues to be a problematic area of research. Despite a significant number of publications, there is no theoretical base - concepts, theories, and research are focused within their specialties. The fundamental concept of sustainable development holds together disparate studies of different specialists and is an attempt to assess the destructive power of tourism, affecting the urban space (building development, historical heritage, living conditions of residents, structuring and integration of the urban space of a tourist city). Each discipline is likely to produce fundamental scientific concepts that are important to the theory and practice of urban planning. Thus, in geography, based on the spatial functions concept, the development of the concept of the geographical functions of urban tourism continues as a systematization of the main directions of the influence of tourism on the organization of urban space: on the location, smoothing out territorial differences, the formation of spatial relations, structuring and integrating urban space, its morphology and management. The authors show active participation of geography in the study of the spatial impact of tourism on urban space.
