The article discusses trade relations between Russia and Japan. Foreign trade relations have deep historical roots. Initially, this manifested itself in the exchange of raw materials and products, which contributed to mutual interest. However, in the 20th century, political tensions, including the consequences of the Russian-Japanese War of 1904-1905, led to a cooling of relations. Since the 21st century, Russia and Japan have begun to find common ground again, especially in the field of energy and high technology. The article examines the period of application of sanctions against the Russian Federation, introduced in 2022. The main forms of the origin and further development of mutual trade in the context of sanctions are described, starting with compensation agreements and energy projects. It is argued that the general content of the bilateral cooperation will be the search for new areas of cooperation in the changing economic landscape.
