The article examines the legacy of D.A. Milyutin, a general, military historian, and statesman, which consists of memoirs and diary entries and contains a large array of documents that Dmitry Alekseevich worked on for many years. This work presents the part of his work that focuses on the difficulties of serving in Cossack units that were stationed in specific areas, as the protection of these territories was the purpose of their existence, as well as the memoirs in which the general spoke about the resettlement of the Black Sea Cossacks and their merger with the linear Cossacks. The diary materials are reliable and accurate, thanks to the fact that the author extensively used documentary sources and compared various historical evidence. D.A. Milyutin’s memoirs reflect the versatility of his personality, his combat experience, and his extensive knowledge and abilities as a prominent statesman and military historian. Count D.A. Milyutin, with his profound and systematic views and his accurate portrayal of the conquest of the Trans-Kuban region, became a central figure in the historical research of the second half of the 19th century.
