The resurrection of the genre. Book review: Artemova S.Yu. Lyric genres today. Tver, Tver State University Publ., 2020. 191 p

The reviewed monograph is devoted to the analysis of the evolution of the genre system in the Russian lyrics of the 20th century. Considering the fate of the epistle, ode, epigram, centon and elegy in the 20th and early 21st centuries, their genesis and the “broken line” of their transformation allows the author to identify the most general trends in the development of lyrical genres. Thematization and formalization are presented as two ways to overcome the automation of perception of traditional genres and to enter a new genre model. S.Yu. Artemova comes to the conclusion that the genre can be built not around mainly formal or mainly substantive characteristics, but around the situation (for example, in the epistle - around communication as such). Formal attributes are most easily rejected. Genres can exchange genre attributes. The genre core can change its “polarity”. First, a canon is formed with a stable set of characteristics, relevant in its inviolability only for a certain period or for a certain type of artistry. It is replaced first by a free genre form (the genre rule), and then by marginal genre forms (the internal measure of the genre). The transformation of the genre canon takes place in the 19th century in a chain - from author to author, in the 20th century - according to the fanlike principle, when one model generates several variants. The ways of genre transformation are taken into account both along the path of attraction and along the path of repulsion. The material of the study was more than 1000 poems of poets of the first series, awarded the academic type of publication in the series “Poet’s Libraries”, as well as the second one, which are urgently needed to demonstrate the periphery of the literary process.
