The paper examined the historical background to state reserve stores and their functioning in Yakutsk region. The research considered the emergence of such stores from the legislative (appropriate legislative framework) and actual (the establishment of the first unofficial shops) points of view in the first half of the 19th century in Yakutsk region. The author identified the Soviet and post-Soviet periods in the historiography of the state reserve stores. In the Soviet historiography, scientists considered this problem from the above-mentioned standpoints. In the post-Soviet period, researchers reviewed this issue indirectly while studying related issues. Having analyzed the relevant laws and regulations and the works of scientists, the author concluded that Yakutsk state reserve stores de facto and de jure appeared in the 1820s, but they became widespread in the 1840s-1850s. The issue under review is of high relevance to the historical community since there are few studies and monographs on the institution of state reserve stores.
