In September 2020, during the 75th session of the UN General Assembly, President Xi Jinping pledged to achieve carbon neutrality for China before 2060. The article reveals the role of renewable and nuclear energy in China’s new climate policy. The paper highlights the resource potential of Chinese renewables, as well as the relationship between China’s renewable strategy and its foreign policy. It is concluded that internal and external factors determine China’s interest in fulfilling obligations to increase the share of non-fossil sources up to 20 % by 2025. However, the creation of a carbon-neutral energy complex still requires combination of renewables, nuclear and fossil-fuels to maintain balance between electricity supply and demand
