This article is devoted to the analysis of an important phenomenon of modern reality - «return to traditions», as sustainable forms of social existence. There is the splitting of the identity of people, the loss of «the system of coordinates», which people use to evaluate the world and themselves in a modern society. A particular part of the society, which is prone to specific identity, has the following reaction - the desire to return to stable identity, traditions. The author proposes an approach to this interpretation - «return to traditions», based on the concept of the «invention of traditions», the term that was proposed by a British philosopher Hobsbawm, who saw «return to traditions», as the creation of «artificial tradition» - the innovation, disguised by the attributes of traditions with a view to its legitimacy.
