Introduction to Deventer systeem

The paper discusses the problems of classification and chronologicaldistribution of ceramics and glass vessels of the late- and post-medieval time. The authorstarted a classification system (now used in the Netherlands and Belgium) with the helpof J. Kottman (glass) and J. Thijssen. The first book on Deventer system was publishedin 1989. Later P. Bitter and S. Ostkamp have made their input. The classification systemwas aimed to work out a single «language» for discussing territorial and chronologicalscopes of definite types of vessels. The system allows creating an (ever expanding)reference collection of archeological ceramics and glass. Its principle is a code of anarcheological find. Today, more than 150 publications made use of a catalogue with typesof the classification system. Is there a new type, than the drawing and picture are added tothe mother database. At the moment there are more than 25 000 entries in the DB. In 2003the first digital system was introduced on a CD with 7500 entries. Now Clevis is busywith a third version that has to be available online in 2016. The only problem is a lack ofmoney.
