Choice of the appropriate animal model of osteoporosis

Experimental modeling of pathological processes plays an important role in study of the pathogenesis of diseases and development of new methods of treatment. Animal models that have been used in the past include non-human primates, dogs, cats, rodents, rabbits, guinea pigs and sheep, all of which have advantages and disadvantages. There are a lot factors which must be considered in discussing the possibility of an animal model. The choice of experimental animals must be scientifically and ethically justifiable, animal model should provide extensive data according to posed questions. For this reason there is a great need for further characteristics of the available animal models for osteoporosis.
