Elective monarchy as a historical phenomenon

An elective monarchy is a type of limited monarchy. It actually lacks the main criterion of the monarchical form, which is the hereditary nature of the transfer of power. At the same time, the analyzed type is characterized by one of the main features of the republic, such as the periodic replacement of the head of state. An elective monarchy should be attributed to the so-called atypical forms of government. It is often also called a monarchical republic. The following form of power existed in different periods in a number of countries. The Russian monarchy at a certain stage of its development also showed some features of an elective monarchy. The article reviews the options and features of the implementation of the designated form of government. As a result of the study, the author concludes that this form should be considered a historical phenomenon, which has also been preserved in the modern world, but in a significantly modified form.
