The relationship between the Basque Country and Madrid after establishing a truce with ETA: contemporaneity and the development prospects of political dialogue

The article considers the current situation in the Basque Country after cessation of the armed struggle of the separatist group ETA. The research analyzes the shift in the ETA ideology during 1968-2010 from the mere demand for national identity recognition in the days of Franco's Dictatorship to manifestations of radical nationalism. The article shows the prospects of ETA's return to the armed struggle. The paper also reviews the main problems of the peace-building in the region: the disarmament of the separatist group and the issue of the ETA case convicts. The author concludes that active interference of Spanish and French politicians and governments is indispensable to normalize the situation at this stage.
