Relationship between writers and local authorities in the Arkhangelsk and Vologda oblasts in 1950’s - 1960’s

The article considers authorities’ participation in the organization of a literary process in the Arkhangelsk and Vologda Oblasts in 1950’s - 1960’s. It has been determined that the development of literary activities depended on local government and its relationship with writers. The author describes the cooperation of writer’s associations and litterateurs with representatives of different levels of government institutions through the preparation of meetings, discussions, and evening gatherings. The article reveals that in the Vologda Oblast authorities’ close attention to the literary process affected creative activity of local writers. The initiative of the Vologda regional committee of the CPSU led to institutionalization and future development of the Writers Union affiliate. The control over books’ and publications’ subjects was conducted by means of ideological activity: goal setting in relation to party requirements, conversation about forms of work with readers and about strengthening of ties with common people’s lives, letters to executive secretaries of the Writers Union affiliate, offerings suggestions and recommendations for works. Provision of housing for writers played an important role; it contributed to intensification of their work. The Vologda Oblast attracted more litterateurs because of closer attention to housing problem solution.
