The authors attempt to analyze the role of poetic genres in B. Pasternak’s cycle «Рoems of Doctor Zhivago» as the cycle has never been analized from this perspective before. The notion of genre is interpreted as a form of creating an artistic whole that helps incorporate a poem into a certain literary row. The researchers single out three genre levels in «Poems of Doctor Zhivago»: elegiac, idyllic and balladic ones. Every genre level has its own topic that is not just borrowed by the poet from a genre tradition but is reinterpreted. These genres can be compared with different materials that are used by the author to create an original canvas of one of the most important poetic cycles in the Russian poetry of the XX century.
