Life and image: the art of Sergey M. Cherkasov

The Primorsky State Art Gallery received a typewritten work “Life and image” in 2005 as a part of personal archives of Vitaly Kandyba, a well-known art historian of Primorye, Higher School Honoured Worker of Russian Federation. The article was prepared for publishing in the regional journal “Science and culture” in 1992, but the issue was not published. The article offers a thorough analysis of Cherkasov`s art works. Cherkasov was a chief art editor of the Far Eastern publishing house for 12 years and managed to form a guild of book graphic professionals for the first time in Primorye art history. Focusing on the art language of Cherkasov as a graphic artist and a painter, Kandyba notices how easel painting principles of improvisation promoted his talent of book designer and how Cherkasov`s gift of graphic artist influenced his painting works.
