The article examines the historical, social and cultural factors of the emergence of the journal Christian Reading . The most important are the spiritual crisis caused by disillusionment with the ideals of the Enlightenment after the war of 1812-1814; the emergence and development of a Christian- oriented part of an educated society in need of spiritual literature in Russian; the formation, as a result of the reform of theological educational institutions in 1808-1814, of a generation of enlightened clergy, whose educational level corresponded to the public expectations of that time. Due to the coincidence of these circumstances, it became possible to create a church periodical publication.
