Snakes of the Northern Caspian region: taxonomic composition and conservation status

Based on our own and literary data, the current taxonomic composition of snakes in the Northern Caspian region (Republic of Kalmykia and Astrakhan region of Russia, Atyrau region of Kazakhstan) has been clarified. The ophidiofauna of the region includes 12 species, of which 10 inhabit Kalmykia, 9, Astrakhan region, and 10, Atyrau region. The Red Book of the Russian Federation includes populations of three species from Kalmykia and the Astrakhan region, and the Red Book of the Republic of Kazakhstan includes two species inhabiting the Atyrau region. 7 species are included in the Red Book of the Republic of Kalmykia, and 6 species are included in the Red Book of the Astrakhan Region.
