The Importance of Crime Categorization for Criminology

Introduction: the article develops the idea that the meaning of categorization of crimes is not limited to the statement of its value in the norms of the branches of legislation of the criminal cycle. The division of crimes into categories also influences criminology, which studies crime as a social phenomenon. Materials and Methods: the research materials are the works of M.M. Babaev, L.A. Bukalerova, V.N. Burlakov, Ya.I. Gilinsky, V.I. Gladkikh, A.I. Dolgova, N.G. Kadnikov, V.E. Kvashis, N.M. Kropachev, M.S. Kruter, A.V. Kudryavtsev, V.N. Kudryavtsev, N.F. Kuznetsova, V.V. Luneev, V.D. Malkov, I.M. Matskevich, A.E. Mikhailov, Yu.E. Pudovochkin, V.E. Eminova et al. The methodological basis of the study was analysis, induction, deduction, generalization and formal-logical methods of cognition. Results: the article defines the criminological significance of crime categorization. Discussion and Conclusions: as a result of understanding the stated topic, the author came to the conclusion that the active use of crime categories in criminological studies will allow substantiating the categorization of crimes into four levels; understanding the causes and conditions of committing crimes in relation to individual categories of crimes; forming an idea of the personality of the criminal who committed crimes of a particular category; developing original forms and methods of counteracting separately the acts that form each of the four categories of crimes.
