A.K. Volnin: in the shadow of the great pupil

The article is devoted to the life and work of the prominent Russian organizer of public education in the first half of the 20th century Alexander Konstantinovich Volnin (1872-1942). This article describes his curriculum vitae, shows the major contribution of Volnin into the development of teachers' education in Russia and Ukraine. It provides information about his scientific works. A. K. Volnin worked in spiritual and secular educational institutions in Pskov and Kyiv. In 1909-1914 he was the director of Veliko-Sorochyntsi Teachers' Seminary, 1914-1917 - the director of the Poltava Teachers ' Institute, where just in the same years A. S. Makarenko studied. The efforts of Volnin on opening and organization of the work of the Novonikolaevsk (nowadays Novosibirsk) Teachers' Institute (1917-1920) are shown. The next place of work of Volnin - Vyatka Institute of people education (1922-1925), where he founded the chair of pedagogy. Biographical information about the family of A. K. Volnin is included.
