The article provides a brief biography of the German naturalist, traveler, secretary of the 1st and 2nd Holstein embassies of Duke Friedrich III to Russia and Persia Adam Olearius. A brief description of his monograph "Description of a Journey to Muscovy" (1647) is given, in which the author sets out his observations about Russia (particularly the sections concerning the Volga River).
