The Axiological Dimension of Veterinary Discourse

The study set out to investigate value dominants of veterinary discourse based on the value-marked texts specific to this field (Russian professional ethics codes, Veterinarian's Oath) and the individual value interpretation by veterinary students whose professional values are shaping. The scrutiny employed a cognitive-and-discursive approach and Q-methodology, which enables systematization of subjective opinions and identification of profession-related personality types based on their prioritized values. The research explored the axiological principles linked to each discourse participant, including the veterinarian, the animal patient, and the animal owner. Three distinct groups of veterinary students emerged based on their prioritized values: "animal advocates," "pragmatic vets" and "practical professionals." Furthermore, the study examined the nuances in linguistic expression of discourse values within each of these groups. The conclusion highlights the influence of divergent value dominants on professional decision-making. They include the protection of the animal's welfare, alignment with the veterinarian's specific objectives, adherence to professional and ethical principles. Additionally, it underscores the distinctive linguistic manifestations of the prioritized values within veterinary discourse as observed in the responses of "animal advocates," "pragmatic vets" and "practical professionals."
